Fun at the Farmers Market

One of the perks of where we live is that our house is within walking distance to a local farmers' market, which is open every Saturday morning in the spring and summer. Unfortunately, Luke and I don't make it there as often as I'd like, but since I knew we didn't have any other commitments this morning (except housework), I've been looking forward to making a date of it ALL week! Is that sad?

So we woke up bright and early, pulled out some cash, and got there around 7, while the weather was still cool and before the crowd got too big. It was a beautiful, sunny morning, except a little windy. We strolled back and forth to all the tents a few times, scoping out the goods to find the best deals. Here are just a few of the wonderful sights:

So what did we come home with, you ask?

Head of lettuce - $2
Cinnamon roll for breakfast - $1.25
Bag of granola (yummy on yogurt) - $1.50
Ginormous English cucumber - $2
Slicing tomatoes - $1.50
Huge bundle of spinach - $1 (the deal of the day by far!)

Not bad for under $10! Plus, I feel good about doing our little part to support the local growers. I think we're going to make it a point to come back more regularly. Next time I'd like to get some flowers to add some color to our landscaping.

Is there a farmers market where you live? What are the goods you can't leave without?

I'm so jealous you live within walking distance! We've got a couple fairly close to us but haven't had a chance to visit yet this year but I need to make a point to do so.

You are so lucky to have farmers markets so close! we have them here but they are only on once a month. Somehow we have managed to miss them all recently and we haven't been there for ages! xx

Looks yummy! We have a ridiculously huge farmers market in Lincoln Park, and we keep saying that we'll hop on our bikes and make the trek this summer. I hope we stick to our word!

There's also a great little market in our own neighborhood, but we're still itching to "make a day of" the bigger one closer to the lake.

But yummy foods aside, I think my favorite things to take home are the flowers!

Wow, your framers market rocks!! and I thougt we had a good one near us!! I love that yours sales pies and jam - how cool!!

We go to the farmers market most Saturdays, if we get up in time. I love buying my flowers from there so much prettier and cheaper then the grocery stores! I also love buying fresh herbs :)

Great deals! We have one in walking distance to our house, but it's only open while I'm at work. What the heck!?

I love farmers' markets, but the ones around here - not so great. But we DID join a CSA this summer! We bought a share from a local farmer, so every Friday we stop out there and get a HUGE bin full of fresh produce - more than we can eat, and we're vegan, you know. So lots. :) Glad you had some good finds!!

We have a farmer's market every Saturday. I also feel like I'm supporting local growers ... and the produce is sooo FRESH.

I read your sisters blog, and just found yours today! I seen your farmers market post and thought your pictures looked oddly familiar. I looked closer and realized we go to the same market! Nice to find a local blogger!
