Bedroom Upgrade: Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress Review (Part I)

This past week, we finally bit the bullet on a long overdue upgrade in our master bedroom: a new mattress! For the past 8+ years, we've been sleeping on an old pillow-top mattress that's not been doing us any favors lately. The more I kept waking up feeling sore and unrested (is that a word?), the more I desperately wanted to replace this thing. Let's face it, I'm not getting any younger and I value my sleepy-time, mmkay?

(Before I continue, this is not a sponsored review for T&N. I just like to document things like this and wanted to share our experience in case anyone else is in a similar situation. Frankly I don't even know if we'll be keeping our new mattress yet!)

I'll spare you the details of the entire decision-making process, but essentially we decided to go with an online mattress company rather than dragging ourselves around to the multitude of mattress stores in town... blame it on the millennial in us.

Anyway, we had our options narrowed down to the Amerisleep AS4 and the Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress. Both of them met my criteria for a (seemingly) eco-friendly mattress, as well a hassle-free return policy and 100-night trial period. Ultimately the Mint Mattress won out due to the fact that it cost several hundred dollars less than the Amerisleep. Their customer service team was also pretty responsive and helpful in answering a few questions I asked via their Facebook page.

In addition to the Mint Mattress, I went ahead and ordered two Tuft & Needle pillows as well as the mattress protector. Because why not start fresh with everything? A few clicks and our much-anticipated bedding was purchased. It took less than a week for all the packages to arrive on our doorstep (the pillows and protector came a couple days before the mattress).

We pulled the 80-pound "mattress burrito" out of the box, into our bedroom, and proceeded to unwrap it from the outer layer of plastic. The vacuum-sealed mattress immediately began to puff up as we unrolled it onto our existing box spring. By the time we pulled off the second layer of plastic it was encased in, the mattress was well on its way to expanding to the full height of 12".

I didn't notice any chemical smells associated with "off-gassing" that I've heard about some mattresses producing. (Presumably because T&N has met several safety certifications  which I'm hoping are all legit because I'm no expert in that area.)

The charcoal knitted cover is super-soft to the touch, and the mattress feels plush yet supportive. With both of us being side sleepers, having a mattress that offers pressure relief is pretty important. We're hopingT&N's Adaptive Foam will do the trick in that area, as well as sleeping cool for my husband's sake.

The pillows (made with the same foam as the mattress) were nicely packaged in their own boxes. They also have a washable cover and the same 100-night trial period as the mattress.

Based on the ordering process, shipping time, unboxing & setup, and initial look/feel of the products, I'm satisfied with our purchase so far. But of course, only time will tell as we adjust to the Mint Mattress whether or not it's the right one for us. I sure do hope I start waking up better though, T&N!

Oh, and this was also a good excuse for me to get some much-needed new sheets, so I found a light gray organic cotton set at Target. Now we are officially ready to let the 100-night trial begin.

To be continued...

How do you like the Tuft and Needle Mint now that you've had it a bit? do you like the pillow?

I'm curious to know how you are liking the bed and pillows, as I'm thinking of purchasing one of their mattresses myself.

To be honest, in the beginning the mattress felt a little too firm for my liking. But I think I've adjusted and I don't really wake up sore very often like I used to. That's probably thanks to both the bed and pillow. I still wouldn'tmind if the pillow was a little thicker, but it's held its shape well. We're getting close to our 100 days, but I imagine we'll end up keeping everything!

The bed & pillows seem to be working out pretty well for both me and my husband. We don't wake up feeling sore and unrested like we used to with our old mattress. The Mint is a little on the firm side but I think I've adjusted. It's also nice not rolling into the middle like we did with the innerspring mattress. :)
