Replacing Floor Registers: Small Project, Big Impact!

One thing I've been wanting to do for quite awhile (at least ever since we replaced our flooring a few years ago) is upgrade our floor registers. These utilitarian brown-ish metal ones were big eyesores next to our weathered vinyl plank floor. But despite being an extremely simple "project" to replace the floor registers, it just hasn't ranked very high on our priority list.

This weekend, as I was making paint touch-ups on some of our white trim and getting up close and personal with our ugly floor registers, I decided to just do something about it. A quick search on Amazon resulted in a plethora of options, of course, some of which were very ornate and/or very expensive (as in $30 each, yikes!). But all I wanted was a clean and simple design in a color that would blend in with our floors, which led me to these rubbed bronze oriental floor registers. Add to cart!

Two days later, the package arrived and I couldn't open it up soon enough. Within a few minutes, all the registers were replaced. Just as I'd hoped, these rubbed bronze floor registers complemented our floor much better. They do have a plastic damper box and lever which is different than the metal we were used to, but at least the plastic is black so it just kind of fades away in the dark vent.

Anyway, I'm very happy we finally pulled the trigger and switched the registers out! Now that I've hyped it up (too much), here's the dramatic transformation you've been waiting for:

P.S. This textured knitted throw is also from Amazon. It's mostly draped over this chair just for decoration, but it's seriously so soft!

Oh, and speaking of accessories for the home... another upgrade we've been gradually making over time is replacing out all our outlets, switches and wall plates. And when I say "we," I mean my husband in this particular case. It's definitely more time-consuming (and expensive) than the floor registers, but worth the end result.

The previous outlets/switches/plates were the basic ivory colored ones and looked very outdated, especially against our cool gray wall color. Our new ones are Leviton brand (Decora style) in white, and the light switches are rockers instead of toggles. We also splurged and got the screwless wall plates, which were not necessary at all, but they do give a nice clean look.

While both of these upgrades may seem small compared to, say, replacing light fixtures or painting walls, they really make a big impact and add the finishing touch to any room. Kind of how a necklace or earrings jazz up an outfit. Have you made any similar improvements in your house?
